Freelance Legal Consultant – Research & Tech Transfer Law

📍 Location: Ghent / Hybrid (remote possible)
📝 Contract: Freelance – On-call basis
📅 Period: 01/10/2025 – 30/09/2029
⏱ Workload: Approx. 2–3 days/week (flexible – avg. 50% FTE)

JPF Lawyers & Consultants is looking for an experienced Freelance Legal Consultant to support one of our public sector clients in the field of research, innovation, and tech transfer law. The consultant will provide on-demand legal services within a Technology Transfer Office (TTO) that collaborates with academic research teams, innovation managers, and administrative units.

Assignments are part of a flexible call-off arrangement and include legal advice, contracting support, and compliance work related to research collaboration, IP, GDPR, and EU funding. Most work can be delivered remotely, with occasional on-site meetings in Ghent, depending on the nature of the project.

🔍 Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice on research collaboration agreements, service contracts, and valorisation projects

  • Draft, review, and negotiate agreements with academic, industry, and European partners

  • Advise on IP-related matters, including licensing, ownership, and spin-off structuring

  • Draft and review data protection clauses and data processing agreements (GDPR)

  • Conduct contract reviews using AI-based tools (LLMs), where applicable

  • Deliver legal support in both Dutch and English

Job requirements

🎯 What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a freelance consultant who meets the following profile:

  • 🎓 Master’s degree in Law

  • ✅ At least 5 years of relevant experience in one or more of the following areas:

    • Research and service agreements

    • GDPR, EU-funded projects, or clinical trial frameworks

    • IP licensing or spin-off formation

  • 🗣 Strong communication skills in both Dutch and English, French is a strong plus

  • 🤖 Experience with AI-based contract review tools (LLMs) is a strong plus
